Fashion Friday: Casual Chic w/ ModCloth

Happy Friday! Today’s ensemble is the result of a prompting by Ije over at Klassy Kinks. This week, she participated in ModCloth‘s Uniquely You Challenge where she was asked to style a specific piece from their collection using up to seven items also sold by ModCloth. Ije suggested we take the dress and style it to our liking. Of course, I had to take her up on that but I’d style this Bea & Dot Palette on Parade Dress using pieces from some of my other favorite retailers. Hey, I’M not doing the challenge LOL! Not yet anyways… Bea Dot shirt dress / H M denim jacket / Combat boots / Forever 21 tote bag / ALDO gold ring / Infinity scarf / Cutout Craze Geo Earrings This shirt dress is too adorable. I love the retro shape and you can go either way with it style-wise. I decided to go casual by first adding a…

Hair Tip Tuesday: Breakage vs Shedding- Know the Difference

Breakage vs shedding. I often hear these terms used interchangeably, do you? Are you aware of the difference between the two? Welp, here ya go… Why is it important to understand if you’re experiencing breakage vs shedding? Once you know the symptoms and causes of an issue, you’re in a better position to treat it. Yes, my friends… shedding is a normal part of the growth cycle. On average, we can lose up to one-hundred hairs per day. The hair that falls out is making room for new hair to come in. However, there are times when shedding can become excessive and be a real cause for concern. For more on these triggers and how you can overcome them, take a look at this post. Breakage, on the other hand, is the result of damage. Dryness, over-manipulation, excessive heat-styling, etc. can all be causes of damage. The tips I’ve listed here…

Hair Tip Tuesday: Listen to Your Hair

While there will be times when we’ll need the help of a pro to assess certain hair issues, most times, if we tune in to our tresses, we can usually find out some things before we make that visit to the salon. 🙂 Yes, our hair will always give us clues that there’s an issue if we really pay attention to it. As for the example in the above graphic, some may actually think all that “snapping, crackling & popping” is normal for coily/kinky hair. Not the case. The likelihood is that you have numerous strands that are knotted together or even single strand knots which are causing your comb or brush to snag on the hair as you manipulate it. Time for that trim! OR, you may simply need to grab your spray bottle, leave-in, etc. and get to moisturizing that hair STAT, making it more manageable. Is your…

Natural Fashionista: Jessica P.

I first came across this beauty on Instagram back in November and right away, she had my attention! Not only was she a fierce naturalista but as I scrolled through her page, I realized she had it on LOCK in the fashion department. After numerous photo reposts and features on my IG page, I decided it was time I introduce her to you, my gorgeous readers. After all, natural hair & fashion are what ToBNatural is all about, right? Meet Jessica… How long ago did you go natural? Why? -I went natural 2/15/11. My last relaxer was 12/29/10. Initially I wanted to transition for a year, but I was too impatient and tired of the permed hair. So I big chopped and only had a half of inch of hair on my head. I loved it! Why do you love being natural? Have there been any challenges along the way? -The best…

3 Tips to Help Cure Dry, Brittle Natural Hair!

This question comes to us from @curiouscoils (how appropriate!) on Instagram. Our resident natural hair care professional Simeko Watkins-Hartley answers… How do I soften my ends? Answer: Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!  Usually, when the ends tend to be harder or rougher than the rest of your hair, it may be due to lack of moisture. The ends are the oldest part of the hair and tend to hang out furthest away from the scalp, so they may dry out faster, leaving a hard, brittle feel. Here are some steps you can take to whip those ends back into shape: 1. When cleansing your hair, use a moisturizing shampoo and luke-warm or cool water to rinse Moisturizing shampoos are usually pH balanced and generally have ingredients that will lubricate the hair, making it soft. Cool water helps to seal the cuticles which aids in making the hair smoother and shinier. 2. Treat your hair to an…
