Hair Tip Tuesday: Moisturizing vs. Sealing

Happy Tuesday y’all! In this edition of Hair Tip Tuesday, we’re briefly exploring the proper uses of certain products for moisturizing your hair versus what you might use to seal. What is Moisturizing? Some synonyms for moisturize are dampen, drench and saturate… words associated with water. Simply put, to moisturize means “to make wet”. Therefore, true moisture comes from either water itself or products that are water-based. You’ll know if your product is water-based if the very first ingredient is good ole H2O. Many leave-in conditioners have this makeup and are great follow-ups to your wash session. Aloe vera juice has also proven to be an effective moisturizer. p.s. Don’t neglect moisturizing your hair from within by drinking lots of water! Sealing… What’s That? Let’s be clear: oils and butters DO NOT moisturize your hair. These are sealants and which are most effective if used while the hair is slightly…

RECAP: In Her Shoes + ESSENCE Magazine Present The Beauties & Brains Behind the Brands II

This past Sunday, April 6th, Renae Bluitt, founder of Crush Media, celebrated the five year anniversary of her amazing blog In Her Shoes at DUMBO’s Galapagos Art Space with “The Brains & Beauties Behind the Brands II”. Having missed the first installment of Beauties & Brains, I jumped at the chance to be a part of round two! The hot ticket event included signature cupcakes courtesy of Tipsy Tasty plus the debut of the In Her Shoes Marketplace where we had an opportunity to shop some of the brands that have been featured on the blog. But of course, in addition to helping Renae celebrate this milestone, we were geared up to be inspired by the panel discussion to be had with Claire Sulmers of Fashion Bomb Daily, Anthony Dickey of Hair Rules, Latham Thomas of Mama Glow and Demetria Lucas of A Belle in Brooklyn & Bravo’s Blood Sweat & Heels. All in…

Artist Spotlight: Sharee Miller | Coily and Cute

I’m amazed at how many talented and inspiring people I’ve come across via social media, especially Instagram. NYC artist/illustrator Sharee Miller is one such person. One look at her drawings and you can’t help but smile. But, there’s more to this naturalista’s art than a series of lines and pretty colors. Here’s her story… Have you always worn you hair in its natural state? If not, when and why did you decide to go back to your natural texture? What was the reaction of your family and friends? Sadly no. Just like many others, I begged for a relaxer in 6th grade and I got it. My hair was long and straight but by 8th grade it all broke off. Since then, I have had short hair and grown to like it. Then while I was in college all my friends were beginning to make the transition back and loving it…

Natural Fashionista: P Roy

Like our first official Natural Fashionista, I discovered this creative young woman on Instagram (…Instagram ROCKS!), drawn initially to her daily fashion posts. We caught up with one another at a meetup last Spring and she was even more beautiful in person. Meet P Roy… How long have you been rocking your natural tresses and what made you take that step? I’ve been completely natural for over 5 years and decided to take that leap because I wanted more versatility with my hair.  I was already rocking curls, weaves, braids, straight hair, etc. and I knew that going natural I would have so many more styles to choose from! So the decision was made and I haven’t looked back since. What’s the best part about being natural? Did you face…
