Hair Tip Tuesday: Moisturizing vs. Sealing

Happy Tuesday y’all! In this edition of Hair Tip Tuesday, we’re briefly exploring the proper uses of certain products for moisturizing your hair versus what you might use to seal. What is Moisturizing? Some synonyms for moisturize are dampen, drench and saturate… words associated with water. Simply put, to moisturize means “to make wet”. Therefore, true moisture comes from either water itself or products that are water-based. You’ll know if your product is water-based if the very first ingredient is good ole H2O. Many leave-in conditioners have this makeup and are great follow-ups to your wash session. Aloe vera juice has also proven to be an effective moisturizer. p.s. Don’t neglect moisturizing your hair from within by drinking lots of water! Sealing… What’s That? Let’s be clear: oils and butters DO NOT moisturize your hair. These are sealants and which are most effective if used while the hair is slightly…

Fashion Friday: 8 Statement Necklaces for (Just About) Any Budget

While Springtime is normally all about bright and bold hues, you don’t necessarily have to be draped in it from head to toe, especially if color really isn’t your “thing”. BUT… a great way to add a pop of color is with a gorgeous statement necklace. The purpose of this piece of jewelry is all in the name- it makes a statement all on its own. That said, they’re best when worn with a rather simple ensemble as it does the job of bringing a taste of drama. Also, simple studs or similar will do if you’re rockin’ one of these. Earrings that are just as attention-grabbing as your necklace are just way too much and will drown out the statement that your neck wear is trying to make. Remember how you used to ransack your mom’s jewelry box and put everything on? Yeah, don’t be that girl. LOL! 😉…

Products Do NOT Create Curl Patterns

You may often read comments under an Instagram pic of someone with curls-a-poppin where someone asks something like, “what can I use to make my hair curl like that?” or… “I use that product and my curls never come out like that!”  Or maybe YOU were the person making these very comments. Well, the the fact is, your curl patterns and textures may just be different. The point is… Curl defining products will only define the type of curl you already have. They will not create a new one! Outside of something containing chemicals, there is no product you can put on your hair that will turn it from tight kinky coils to flowy, bouncy, loose curls in one easy application. BUT… If you DO want achieve that type of look, you aren’t without options! You can easily set your hair using various methods — twisting, braiding, bantu knots — to temporarily alter…

Hair Tip Tuesday: Proceed w/ Caution When Heat Styling

I’ve come across many a natural who is scared to death of coming anywhere near a heat styling tool for fear of heat damage. Then there are those who don’t particularly care too much and say heat styling is just fine. Who’s “right”? Well, you can do with it whatever you like, really. It is, after all, YOUR hair! But there is a need for caution. Check out the short video clip below to see why… The misconception about naturally curly/coily/kinky hair is that it can take a beating and still somehow maintain its health. Excessive heat, however, can cause dryness which leads to breakage and can also permanently straighten your hair. Some actually don’t mind this alteration as they may be trying to “heat train” their tresses (that’s a topic for another post, girls!). However, if you actually want to wear your curls again and you’re heat styling too…

Hair Tip Tuesday: Don’t Weave It & Forget It!

I understand… sometimes our hair needs a break or we may want to make life a bit easier by installing a weave. Thing is, while they can be cute, some of us forget that we actually have hair under there! O_O Some women (and I know this for a fact!) feel that once they slap that puppy on, they can just get up and go for months on end without giving any attention to the hair growing out of their scalp. No bueno, kids! You MUST take care of your OWN hair, even especially when you were weaves and wigs. That closed-in environment can become a hotbed for bacteria and fungus! Leaving your hair to its own devices can lead to buildup of excessive dandruff and more serious issues like hair loss and infections. PLEASE, regularly cleanse, condition and moisturize your hair and scalp. But some may wonder… How Is That…
