Our resident natural hair care professional Simeko Watkins-Hartley answers… Should you sleep with conditioner in your hair? Answer: You shouldn’t, as this can be potentially harmful by having an adverse effect on the hair. Let me explain but first let me ask you this… If you were experiencing symptoms of some sort and the doctor prescribes medication, would you follow the instructions given by the doctor or would you take more than what was prescribed in hopes that the symptoms go away faster? Would you not agree that by doing the latter, you may cause more harm than good?! Well, likewise with deep conditioning your hair. If the manufacturer states to leave the product on the hair for a certain period of time, it’s most likely because through tests and trails, they were able to determine the amount of time it takes for the product to absorb and penetrate into…
Happy Thursday everyone! While attending a brunch a few weeks ago, I tweeted this quote said by one of the pioneers of the natural hair community in attendance: “Bloggers & hair care pros need to bridge the gap so that the correct info is put out there.” #MastersBrunch @DianeCBailey — Toia B. That said, I have teamed up with Simeko Watkins-Hartley of Meko New York Natural Hair Care Spa & Boutique to bring you “Ask the Pro”! Last Saturday, Scarlett Rocourt, creator of Wonder Curl, launched two new products to add to her amazing collection of hair care goodies at Meko New York Natural hair Care Spa in Orange, NJ. Say hello to the Detoxifying Clay Cleanser and Restoring Hair Treatment. With the assistance of hair care professional and Meko New York owner Simeko Watkins-Hartley, Scarlett showed us how the Clay works to cleanse the hair and scalp of impurities, detangles and conditions the hair all at once. The Restoring Hair Treatment contains shea butter, avocado butter, EVOO, tamanu oil and hair vitamins which penetrate the hair to strengthen from within to help revitalize dry kinks and curls. Naturalistas from all around came to show their love and support for Wonder…
Well, helloooo there! 🙂 Thanks for joining us as I wrap up my Q&A with Simeko Watkins-Hartley, owner of Meko New York Natural Hair Care Spa & Boutique. Last time, Simeko talked about her own journey and the rough road in the pursuit of nappiness (if you missed that action-packed story, click here!) Now, let’s get into how she feels about the natural life these days along with some tips for YOU. We’ll also debunk a few natural hair misconceptions and see what’s on the horizon for Meko New York… TBN: Tell us why you love being natural. Although being a professional, have there been any challenges along the way? SWH: Well, I know personally, for me, being natural is the best thing. It’s the healthiest thing, and I’m into health. Everybody who knows me, I eat healthy… I’m very into health and I know being natural is the best…
Welcome back! And now, continuing my chat with Simeko, owner of Meko New York Natural Hair Care Spa & Boutique in Orange, NJ, we get into the spa ‘experience’ and her own… challenging interesting journey to natural. Missed Part I? Click here! ^_^ TBN: What’s it like to sit in Simeko’s styling chair, what kind of experience do clients receive? SWH: Well, first and foremost, it’s information and inspiration. If I haven’t given you one of those two things then I didn’t do my job… seriously. People come because they want their hair to be taken care of, more importantly, because they can go anywhere to get it styled. But they come to me because they know that I’m going to take care of their hair as I’ve taken care of my own and I’m going to give them that information that they need, which most stylists won’t, so that they can truly care…
