We’ve been talking much about how protective styles in conjunction with moisturizing and sealing can be most beneficial for your hair this fall. To keep the theme going, I thought I’d run down a few of the oils and butters I like to use to keep my hair in the best shape possible as the temps continue to drop. Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) This rather heavy oil helps to thicken hair, making it strong from the inside out. It’s been known to increase blood flow to the scalp sending nutrients to hair follicles which, in turn, boosts hair growth. The smell isn’t the greatest so I like to put in a few drops of peppermint and tea tree essential oils. Not only do they help make the scent of the JBCO a little more bearable but they are both great for scalp health. JBCO, an unrefined form of regular castor oil, can be used directly on…

Happy Tuesday y’all! In this edition of Hair Tip Tuesday, we’re briefly exploring the proper uses of certain products for moisturizing your hair versus what you might use to seal. What is Moisturizing? Some synonyms for moisturize are dampen, drench and saturate… words associated with water. Simply put, to moisturize means “to make wet”. Therefore, true moisture comes from either water itself or products that are water-based. You’ll know if your product is water-based if the very first ingredient is good ole H2O. Many leave-in conditioners have this makeup and are great follow-ups to your wash session. Aloe vera juice has also proven to be an effective moisturizer. p.s. Don’t neglect moisturizing your hair from within by drinking lots of water! Sealing… What’s That? Let’s be clear: oils and butters DO NOT moisturize your hair. These are sealants and which are most effective if used while the hair is slightly…
And now, the third but definitely one of the most important steps in keeping that hair growing strong and healthy: Moisturize Moisturize Moisturize! I find I get the best results by layering & sealing. After washing my hair, while it’s still damp (water being the first “layer”, in a sense), I apply a water-based leave-in conditioner. I then coat the strands with either a butter or an oil, paying special attention to the ends, to lock all that goodness in. Properly moisturized hair is less likely to break or split at the ends which ultimately means you’ll retain what you grow. Wanna find out more about sealing in moisture? Check this out! That’s all for now. See you later people! Stay beautiful. 😉 xoxo ~Toia
