Soooo… is it wrong if I take someone else’s go-to hairstyle and use it as my own? No, Okay, cool… ’cause that’s what’s happening! LOL! It’s no secret (at least within the natural hair community) that Essence.com Beauty Editor Nicole M. Melton is known for her fabulously coiffed topknot. I’ve seen Nicole around the circuit a number of times and it’s only upon catching up with her at a CurlBOX event at the Ouidad Salon in NYC last summer that I got to see that this was no ordinary bun! When she sat down for her consultation and began to take her hair down, I tried to sneak a peek at how she’d put it back together! ^_^ But alas! Amid the schmoozing and networking, I didn’t catch how it was done. Fast forward a few months… I’m finally on Instagram. Of course, I’m following Miss Melton, gawking at this…
Teyonah Parris hits the red carpet with another fierce updo at the Mad Men Season 6 Premiere in L.A. Y’all know I just loooooovvve a huge bun almost as much as I love an obnoxiously large pompadour and this style right here seems to be doing double-duty. Like her S.A.G. Awards ‘do, Teyonah has caused quite the commotion (in a good way!) with this DaRico Jackson creation. The hair tops off the perfect silhouette created by this amazing high-neck, body-hugging dress by J. Loren. With gold detail and see-thru side paneling, this dress is saying “HERE. I. AM!” There’s a lot to be said about a woman (or quite possibly her stylist) who knows what shapes are flattering to her body. I have yet to see Teyonah miss a beat. Hitting a few inches below the knee, the dress is just the right length to be rounded out by these…
In the month of November, I decided to begin protective styling with my favorite thing- kinky twists! At least… I think they were kinky twists. LOL Ya see, I used Bob Bulk hair by Janet Collection which isn’t quite kinky yet isn’t quite as straight as normal kanekalon braiding hair. You may recall this style post, inspired by Chanel Boateng on the YT. Anywho, here are four more styles I wore during the month and a half that I had these twists in. Enjoy! Classy. Simple. Elegant. Be it a top knot, doughnut or ninja, the high bun is one protective style that will never lose its chic appeal! During my relaxed years, I was definitely identified by this do… so much so that my husband, then boyfriend, dubbed me “bun-head”. Cute, I guess. ^_^ Here’s some high bunspiration for ya! Enjoy! Seems to me the high bun is great for any occasion… Do you agree? 😉 Share your high bun styles with me on facebook! xoxo ~Toia
