    Toia’s Tips: Detangling!!

First things first: you cannot treat your kinky/coily/curly hair the way you did when it was relaxed! (DUHHH, right?!) Yes, your comb used to glide through that straight hair with ease. But who says the same can’t be the case with your natural tresses?? Here’s what might help ya! Product You will find detangling to be a breeze if you do so while your hair is wet and saturated with your conditioner of choice. Low on cash? Grab that Olive Oil out of the pantry! Natural oils are great alternatives and provide so many benefits! Me? I coat my hair with GOBS of SheaMoisture’s Deep Treatment Masque along with either Extra Virgin Olive Oil (aka EVOO) or Vegetable Glycerin. Tools For the best results, a wide-toothed comb is recommended. I have yet to try this one but many naturals swear by the ever popular Denman Brush (above). My detangling tool of choice, though, is the Tangle…

    Commuter Coiffure Connection: An experience…

This happens pretty often these days. I’d like to share with you the most recent random encounter I had with a fellow natural… Step onto the train, headed home. I caught the stare of a lady with locs sitting across from where I was standing. She started mouthing something to me (whilst some Beyonce song was bumping in my ears), giving me a “thumbs up”, gesturing towards her own hair. I figured out she was saying she liked mine (a bun of consisting of Marley braiding hair). Now wait. She should talk! Shoot. HERRRR locs were GORGEOUSLY styled in some kinda knotted, twisted, criss-crossed bun-type… Ok. Let’s just say it was BEAUTIFUL! I told her so. She thanked me. I went back to my corner…and Beyonce. Just when I thought that was the end of it, she comes over and asks to take some pics of my hair, “now that’s what…

    Bananapple-Orange & Spinach Smoothie!

(Hey, I was trying to come up with a catchy name for this, didn’t quite work! LOL!) Here’s a simple smoothie recipe to try! Most of my smoothies are created simply from whatever I happen to have in the fridge that day… so here goes! 2 cups of spinach 1 large orange 2 bananas 2 Granny Smith apples 1 Tbsp flaxseed 1/2 cup water (approx) or ice cubes 1/2 cup of milk Chop your fruit down blender-friendly size, throw all your ingredients in there and blend away! For my rather old Oster blender, I find it best to start things on “blend” at high speed and then work my way up each function to “liquefy”. You may have to stop midway and help it along with a spoon, just to make sure everything mixes well. Substitute the water for your favorite natural fruit juice (I didn’t have any that day…

    Oh Honey!

Did you know that honey is a natural humectant? This means that it’s great as a conditioner and moisturizer because of its ability to attract and retain water molecules. It’s also a natural emollient. With these properties, honey leaves hair looking shinier and feeling softer, plus, it’s full of enriching vitamins and minerals. Here’s an easy honey rinse you can use to restore shine and body to your hair. *1 tsp of honey *4 cups of warm water Warm the honey a bit so it’ll be easier to pour & mix into the water. Mix well. As the final step in your normal wash routine, pour the rinse onto your hair (or apply with a spray bottle) and do not rinse out. Dry & style as usual.
