This style has been around for quite a bit but boy has my Instagram feed been inundated by this protective style! Oh, oh… don’t get me wrong. I LOVE it (hence the title). I’m just sayin’, it has definitely become the go-to style for many especially during vacation season and in the spirit of just plain ole not-wanting-to-have-to-do-your-hair-ness. You GO girls… I’ll be joining you very soon! Many naturals have found a way to save a few bucks and use Marley hair to achieve a similar look. You’ll often see the terms “Havana Twists” and “Marley Twists” used interchangeably but technically, it all boils down to the type of hair that’s used. Either way, it’s about to be on and…

Soooo… is it wrong if I take someone else’s go-to hairstyle and use it as my own? No, Okay, cool… ’cause that’s what’s happening! LOL! It’s no secret (at least within the natural hair community) that Essence.com Beauty Editor Nicole M. Melton is known for her fabulously coiffed topknot. I’ve seen Nicole around the circuit a number of times and it’s only upon catching up with her at a CurlBOX event at the Ouidad Salon in NYC last summer that I got to see that this was no ordinary bun! When she sat down for her consultation and began to take her hair down, I tried to sneak a peek at how she’d put it back together! ^_^ But alas! Amid the schmoozing and networking, I didn’t catch how it was done. Fast forward a few months… I’m finally on Instagram. Of course, I’m following Miss Melton, gawking at this…
The tapered fro has quickly gained popularity in the natural hair space this past year and I have a feeling it's gonna be around for a LONG time! Here is a look at this funky cut in all its glory.
Classy. Simple. Elegant. Be it a top knot, doughnut or ninja, the high bun is one protective style that will never lose its chic appeal! During my relaxed years, I was definitely identified by this do… so much so that my husband, then boyfriend, dubbed me “bun-head”. Cute, I guess. ^_^ Here’s some high bunspiration for ya! Enjoy! Seems to me the high bun is great for any occasion… Do you agree? 😉 Share your high bun styles with me on facebook! xoxo ~Toia
Pump up the volume! Achieve a similar look by using medium to large sized perm or flexi rods. Set while wet. When dry, using a little oil on your fingertips, separate each ringlet. Shake & fluff gently at the roots with a pick or your fingers until you’ve achieved the desired look. Have fun with your hair! xoxo ~Toia
