the purpose of a protective style is in the name. installing braids or twists too tight can lead to irreversible damage. whether you DIY or have it done in a salon, make sure care is taken with the amount of tension being placed on your hair & scalp.

it seems some aren’t aware that they can still cleanse their hair & scalp while wearing braids, twists or cornrows. Or, they just don’t know how to do it. try this: dilute your favorite shampoo with water in an applicator bottle for easy application throughout the parts of the hair, gently massage the scalp & rinse.

we naturally lose up to 150 strands of hair per day. when your hair is in a protective style for a week or more, the hair loss you see is an accumulation of natural shedding over time. don't freak out! it's best to detangle & remove that shed hair before washing to prevent matting & tangling. try giving the hair a pre-poo!
