As naturalistas, we can often get bored rockin the same ole twist-out. Sure, braids and cornrows can spice up a fro, but what if you just don’t have that talent? Enter Debbie’s Darling- a line of beautiful handmade floral hair accessories for “darlings of all ages”.
Debbie’s Darling creator Heather Davis tells us how she used her creativity to produce this budding brand…
About Heather
I’m a 28 year old stay at home mom and housewife, and I started Debbie’s Darling as a way to remain sane and have some fun. I’ve been sewing since I was about 3 years old, thanks to my awesome mommy. She graduated from FIT and was making custom wedding gowns at the time. Pretty much the only way to keep me out of her projects was to give me my own. She taught me to sew by hand and how to create details in my sewing. When I was 4, she bought me my first sewing machine, but hand sewing will always be my first love. I owe my love of sewing to my mom, and I wanted to reference that in my business name. Her family nickname is Debbie and I’m her one and only. She’s still one of my biggest supporters, and I like reflecting that in my shop name.
The Beginnings of Debbie’s Darling
About 5 years ago, a friend of mine was complaining that she couldn’t find nice hair accessories that didn’t look like everyone else’s. I started playing with different materials, and settled on felt. She loved them and people started trying to buy them while she was wearing them.
I pretty much stuck to custom orders and the occasional natural hair show, but I’ve recently decided to try my hand at an Etsy shop. Along with opening a shop, I’ve gotten more adventurous with my designs.
So far, the response has been really encouraging. The best compliment I’ve gotten so far was a lady telling me that my pieces were nicer than anything she could find in a store. That pretty much made my month! I love the idea that something I make can be the finishing touch to someone’s look.
Life as a Natural Gal
As for my own look, I keep it simple. I’ve been natural for my entire life, minus 2 fateful months. Let’s just say that 2 months before your wedding is NOT the time to try a relaxer for the first time ever. My hair broke right off to the new growth.
Fortunately, I discovered a new love for short hair. Over the years I’ve grown it out, but I always end up back to my shorter style. It suits my personality and lifestyle, and less time twisting means more time sewing! :-).
Thank you so much, Heather, for allowing us to get to know you and Debbie’s Darling!

I know! She does great work!
I need to get into accessories. Other than scarves I don’t really use them!

Oh wow! Yes, girl, they’re great for a formal event or just to give a pop of color during the summertime. I’ve used single flowers for weddings, etc. But I do love a good scarf/headwrap. 😉
She makes really beautiful pieces. I am going to visit her Etsy shop and catch some of those sales.
