Natural Fashionista: Victoria aka Vic Styles

I kinda do a little dance when I discover a natural beauty with amazing style. Blogging and social media have surely connected me with quite a few fly chicks along the way. Please add this cutie pie to the list!

Meet this month’s Natural Fashionista…
Vic-Styles-Pink-Top

Hey lovers!! I’m Vic Styles. I live in LA by way of Alabama & DC. I’m a full time wardrobe stylist, fashion blogger and, of course, a naturalista.

How long have you been wearing your hair in its natural state and what made you decide to take that step?

I have been natural my entire life. My mother never put a relaxer in my hair and I honestly had no knowledge about chemically processing my hair. I just knew this was how it grew out of my head so this is what I have to work with.

What do you love the most about your natural hair? Any challenges you’d like to share?

I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT MY HAIR! Honestly, my hair may be my favorite physical attribute. I love how versatile it is and how much attention it gets. Now… the keeping it moisturized struggle is very real. My hair is extremely dry so I have to do extra work to keep it healthy.

Briefly fill us in on your current hair care routine and your “go-to” styles.

I deep condition my hair weekly with Heavenly Scent‘s Opulently Organic Conditioner mixed with honey & 1 egg. At night I pineapple my hair and sleep on a satin pillowcase.

To refresh my hair in the mornings, I spritz with my “Vic Spritz” (water, glycerin, aloe vera juice, coconut oil) and then I briefly steam my hair with my Q-Redew.

Do you feel that wearing your hair in its natural state has changed or somehow affected your overall fashion sense?

Honestly, since I’ve had this hair my whole life I don’t really let it “shape” my style. I will say that it does complete the package though. I feel like my fro is my best accessory.

How would you describe your personal style? Who or what inspires you?

My personal style is very feminine and eclectic. I love dresses and skirts and pink. Actually, I love & appreciate all colors. I like mixing prints and textures as well as colors.

As far as who inspires me: my mom. Her fashion sense is out of this world. As far as celebrity inspirations, Solange & Nicole Richie can do no wrong in my eyes.

As a wardrobe stylist, how hard is it to bring out the best in your clients without imposing your own personal style?

It’s not that hard. I get to know my clients and their likes & dislikes. I will, of course, try to push the envelope or introduce them to styles they may not normally try but I never let my own personal style reflect in theirs. I think part of being a great stylist is having the ability to be a chameleon for your clients. I want them to feel unique and not like a photocopy of me.

You’re going on a trip and can only pack four pieces of clothing… GO!

First Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! That’s impossible!!! But… I would pack a maxi dress, white t-shirt, an oversized scarf, and a good pair of jeans. I can remix those 4 items and create at least 10 outfits.

Quite a number of fashionistas in general have caught the thrift bug! Are you a “thrift queen”, an online/mainstream clothing store shopper or somewhere in between? What are your favorite spots?

I love to thrift. Wait, I used to love to thrift. Especially in college. Because my schedule is so busy now, I don’t really have the time for it, but it is a love of mine. I really enjoy the hunt for great finds. My closet is an array of vintage and trendy. I like to mix high and low end pieces as well as vintage. I love Asos.com, Net-a-porter, Zara & Topshop. They seem to always have everything I need.

What one piece of wardrobe styling advice you’d like to leave us with? Care to share a little something with the newbie naturals as well?

Styling advice: just be YOU. Our generation is so image conscious because of social media. Lots of us are starting to look like carbon copies of one another. It’s okay to be different, as long as you are being true to yourself.

For any new naturals or anyone who may be struggling with this whole being natural thing: Patience is key! It will grow, it just takes time. You can achieve those styles… it just takes trial & error. I’ve had this head of hair for 28 years and I’m STILL learning new things about it.
