Among the thousands of beautiful natural hair styles that flood our social media feeds, outside of your basic twist-out or braid-out, there’s probably nothing more popular than the rod set. But let’s face it, the style just comes easier for some folks. I mean, have you seen these girls almost effortlessly put those flexi rods in and end up with perfect ringlets?! Hmph!
Needless to say, I was quite nervous about trying to tackle a flexi rod set. Have you been in that boat? I kinda cheated when it came time to do a perm rod set but I wanted to go all in with these flexi rods. I thought it would be a smart idea to try it out on a small section of hair first and a bang just made sense. I was determined to get the hang of it!
For this curly bang by way of a flexi rod set, I used the entire Mielle Organics Mongongo Oil Collection which was specifically created to keep hair hydrated & protected while heat-styling. I wanted to make things a little easier by stretching the hair out with my blow dryer. As for the rest of the hair, I put it up in my go-to, super simple top knot. Here’s a breakdown of the products in the order they were used. Click each one to see its benefits:
- Pre-Shampoo Treatment
- Exfoliating Shampoo
- Hydrating Conditioner
- Thermal & Heat Protectant Spray
- Pomade-to-Oil Treatment
- Style Setting Spray
The main thing is getting the technique of the flexi rod install down. I think once you’ve got that, you’re good to go! Take a look below to see how I did!
I was really impressed with the Mielle Organics Mongongo Oil Collection. It helped me achieve a smooth blowout to prep for the style. Plus I got the soft hold I needed from the Style Setting Spray to keep the curls poppin’ all week – no crunchy feeling! Now that I’ve tried this flexi rod set, I feel a little more confident in trying this on my entire head sometime soon.
