Larry Sims- also responsible for this beautiful braided updo on Lupita– created a unique look for Adepero Oduye’s 88th Academy Awards appearance. Here, the Smooth ‘N Shine Celebrity Hairstylist shares how we can recreate the Adepero Oduye Oscar updo with just a few simple steps.
- Start with the natural hair texture and smooth Smooth ‘N Shine Instant Edge Smoothing Pomade throughout the hair and hairline for a sleek silhouette
- Create a ponytail at the crown, leaving the very top portion out and loose
- Next, create a double strand twist from the left to right of the crown
- With the rest of the loose hair, give it an under twist (aka roll, tuck & pin) and repeat three times, giving it height, into a crown look
- Complete the look with Smooth ‘N Shine Spray-On Polisher to finish
If you don’t quite have the length or volume, add what you don’t have, I always say. Try attaching some Marley braiding hair to your ponytail using the rubber band already provided on the hair. After sectioning off a few strands for the front twist, just use a couple bobby pins to hold the twist in place on the left and bring around the front to the right. Got it? 😉

Yeah, Teyonah’s hair is always on point! I don’t think she was at the Oscars this year. Didn’t see any photos of her there.
