For as long as I’ve known myself, I’ve always been one to wear what I like, not particularly caring what others thought. Sure, as a kid, it wouldn’t feel great to be teased about my choice of clothing from time to time but in the end, I still did pretty much what I wanted when it came to what I wore. Mommy definitely dressed me in trendy clothing when we could afford to do so (we did color block tops and capris hard in the 90s!) but my personal style was still reflected in those pieces.
The pleated skirt was one of those things I loved without a care who didn’t! Time for a little story…

I remember preparing to attend an event many years ago, visiting friends and family, and buying a long, grey pleated skirt for the first time with my own money! I was either in my late teens or early twenties so we’re talking late 90s/early 2000s. Pleated skirts weren’t really the “thing” among the girls in my age group at that time but I LOVED it so that’s what I wore! I styled it with a black ribbed turtleneck and some black sock booties and wore my hair in a sleek high bun. Chile!! *cue Old Town Road beat* “Can’t nobody tell me nothinnnn!!”
Welp, as my friends and I were standing around chatting during a break, I noticed from the corner of my eye that a girl around our age was scoping out my outfit. She then leaned in close to her friend and with an outside voice asked, “you like her skirt?!” with an inflection of distaste in her tone. Ugh! Really though?! Wow. Yeah, it bothered me for half a second but all I could do was laugh. Girl, I didn’t dress for you. I you don’t like it, keep it movin.
And NOW look… errybody wants a pleated skirt! HA!! That said, I’ve corralled a bunch for you to choose from, ten to be exact! From midi to long, from solids to prints and from matte to metallic, I’ve found something for everyone!

So what do you think of pleated skirts as a wardrobe staple? You can dress them up or down and they’re super convenient cuz they never need ironing! Whenever I’m in a pinch for time, I throw one on with any ole top and I’m good to go! So while pleated skirts may be a rather “trendy” item, I think it’s one of those that’s here to stay – I know mine aren’t going anywhere!
