So, thanks to ‘Rona, we’re spending the bulk of our time in the house. It can get old after a while, but one thing that’ll help make it a little more bearable is if your home is clean and tidy.
Now that you and the kids (if you have ’em) are home all day, staying on top of it can be even more of a challenge!
I’ve learned we can keep our home clean by doing just a few simple things each day without overworking ourselves in one long day. Here they are…
1. If You Can Do It Done Quickly, Do it NOW!
This is simple enough, no? Basically, if something takes as little as a minute or two to get done, just take care of it immediately. I’m talkin’ a quick wipe down of the bathroom sink or small spills and water droplets along the kitchen counters and floors. Do a little spot cleaning of the microwave right after you remove that plate of leftovers before gettin’ your grub on. Just had a bowl of cereal? As my Bajan mother would say, “just turn around and clean it the same time”. I mean, you’re already in the kitchen… might as well!
Think how much easier your life would be if you did just this every day! Get those small jobs done right away and you’ll save yourself more work later.
2. Make Your Bed
I don’t know about you, but if I have to go in my bedroom for anything throughout the day and I open up the door to a neatly made bed… girl! The PEACE and tranquility I feel when I walk in and everything is neat and uncluttered. It really makes a huge difference! Especially if you’ve got a small bedroom, like we do, where the bed takes up most of the space, having the bed made essentially means that the whole room, for the most part anyway, at least looks clean.
Understandably, sometimes, you’ll have to adjust to your circumstances and daily routine. My husband usually takes a nap when our son does in the middle of the day (we both work from home). So instead of perfectly snapping the bedding into place, only for it to be disrupted soon after, I’ll just casually but neatly, pull the sheets up and straighten the pillows. Takes three minutes tops!
3. “A Place For Everything and Everything In Its Place!”
This is major in helping you keep your home clean! Have a specific place for all your stuff and make sure you put the stuff back in their place once you’re done with them. That’s the tough part! Even if you have to have a sort of “catchall” bin for miscellaneous items that may not necessarily go together, cool. Just make sure you know what’s in it. If you use a closed container, label it. You may wanna go through said container or bin every once in a while to see if you can make sense of it or remove items to be placed with their cousins elsewhere.

As an example, Micah’s socks and ties have an easily accessible bin all to themselves as well as his wipes (yup, still use those!) his underwear and bath essentials. A room looks so much neater when everything has a home.

This is a rule my mom has ingrained in me since I was young when it came to cooking and keeping the kitchen tidy. I still follow it to this day! But this tip can be used as you go about any other activity throughout the day.
Make it a habit to pick up any pieces of lint or other randomness you happen to spot on the floor/carpet as you’re walking through your home. Also, before you go from one room to another, check to see if there are any items that need to go back to their homes, whether it’s to your destination or another room that’s on the way. When your toddler is done playing with those blocks, put ’em away before he moves on to another activity.
Lastly, and this can be tough after a long day BUT, try to put your clothes away as soon as you take them off before bed. It’s so easy to just drape them on that chair in the corner (trust me, I know!) but you’re just setting yourself up for more work later.
5. Spruce Up Before Bed
There’s nothing more refreshing than waking up on a beautiful, sunny morning and walking into a clean living room! To make that possible, I make sure I do a quick spruce-up every night.
As you can imagine, thanks to my little man, our living room can end up looking like a war zone by bedtime. So before we head to sleep, we have him put all the trains and cars back where they belong and I “reset” the throw pillows. The next morning, I can kick my feet up and enjoy a few moments of peace in a clean room before he wakes up. Best feeling ever!

A schedule helps me stay organized, which in turn makes it easier for me to keep my home clean. I use a paper calendar, or set up an app like Google Calendar or iCalendar to create a schedule that works for me. Thanks for the these tips on this post. Will be trying them too.

Happy to hear that! Thanks for checking out the post. 🙂
#2 is so important to me. I have to make my bed when I wake up. If not it bothers me so much!!

Yes girl, same here. I can’t focus if my bed is not made! It makes my brain also feel messy! LOL! Thanks for chiming in!
A place I actually love coming home to and feel proud of calling my own is minimalism. Filling it up with clutter that doesn’t bring a smile to my face and serve a purpose (even if that purpose is only to make my home more cozy) isn’t.

I can totally relate! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
When you are organized, you own your stuff; it doesn’t own you. What this means is you are no longer a slave to maintaining, upgrading and attaining.

Yep, true indeed! Thanks for chiming in.
